A Legacy of Compassion and Caring

In 1843, three young women aged 18, 19 and 20 arrived in Pittsburgh from Carlow, Ireland. Known as the Sisters of Mercy, their mission was to serve the poor, the sick and the uneducated. The Pittsburgh Sisters of Mercy established numerous schools, an orphanage, the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, and on September 24, 1929, they founded what is now known as Carlow University. Because of their selfless work, Carlow is much more than just a place to learn. It is an incubator for goodness, service and, above all, mercy.

With NYC nurses, doctors and health care workers facing unprecedented challenges in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carlow family nurse practitioner graduate Abbigail “Abby” Linton felt the pull to serve patients in a COVID rehabilitation and hospice unit in the pandemic epicenter.

From Accounting to Arts Administration

Carlow Graduate Katie Winter graduated with degrees in both accounting and art. After interning at two Pittsburgh accounting firms and creating mixed-media paintings, she realized her dream was to combine her two passions and work in administration at a large art museum. She’s currently working toward a Master’s in Arts Management at Carnegie Mellon University.

Carlow Bachelor of Social Work alumna Alizé Strickland found her calling as the family engagement coordinator for the Homeless Children’s Education Fund, where she advocates for homeless children with a focus on coordinating efforts to secure access to education.

New Plans. New Programs. New Momentum.

Carlow University has developed a 10-year Capital Campus Transformation Plan to meet the needs of the 21st century students. Among its priorities, the University plans to build an Interdisciplinary Health & Science Center to house the University’s graduate health science programs. The Center will house state-of-the-art learning and laboratory space, and enhance Carlow students’ high-quality, cutting-edge educational experiences.
